Outdoor Motion Capture for Cricket: Apple Arts Studios’ Innovative Setup at IIT Goa

At Apple Arts Studios, we’re constantly exploring new ways to push the boundaries of motion capture technology. One of our most exciting projects took us outdoors, where we set up a mobile OptiTrack PrimeX 22 system on the cricket ground at IIT Goa in partnership with Quidich Innovation Labs. The mission: to capture the lightning-fast movement of a cricket ball with pinpoint accuracy.

⚙️ The Outdoor Setup

Unlike the controlled environment of a studio, outdoor mocap presents unique challenges. For this project, our team built a full-scale motion capture pipeline on the cricket field.

Rigging began at 5 PM every evening.
Calibration was completed by 5:30 PM.
Recording sessions ran until midnight under floodlights.

Across two days, we captured hours of real cricketing action, producing an extensive ball-tracking dataset for Quidich.

🚧 Overcoming Challenges

Outdoor mocap requires more than just technology — it needs expertise and planning. We had to tackle:

Low lighting conditions with only stadium floodlights.
Large open space without the reflective surfaces that indoor systems rely on.
Extended shoot durations to gather sufficient data.

Despite these hurdles, the OptiTrack PrimeX 22 system performed flawlessly, delivering precise results.
